The First K9 Trooper In The New York State Police James Keough Books

I have known Jim Keough for many years and thoroughly enjoyed reading this book knowing the majority of the Troopers mentioned in it. Jim is the best storyteller that I have ever known and had a nickname for almost every one, he called me"Defendo." There was a few times that I needed to call him and he always came no matter what, no questions asked. Shortly after Blanche died I called him and asked if he would meet me. He dropped what he was doing and drove almost 20 miles without asking why. I had cooked a weeks worth of food for his family and wanted to give it to him. At that time he was the only person I knew who would come without hesitation or questioning. He has a heart of gold!

On one occasion I came home to find a chipmunk in my family room not moving just shaking uncontrollably. Since there were a lot of rabid animals in the area I called the Guilderland SP and asked who was working. Fortunately Jim was and he soon arrived. He said he would have been there sooner but had to stop and get more bullets! (The 40 that he had wasn't enough!)

Good job on the book Jim! I have contacted a sister/daughter of someone mentioned that you worked with and told her about it also.

The First K9 Trooper In The New York State Police James Keough Books Reviews

Jim Keough (my father) started on the New York State Police in 1965 after a four year tour in the Marine Corps. He became a K-9 handler for the NYSP and as such was involved in many cases throughout the state. The book is filled with stories of his “capers” both while he had his best partner, Baretta, and the times when he was forced to work with mere human troopers. The stories are told in a way that makes it easy to see why my father was such a sought after story teller and master of ceremonies when I was growing up.

Obviously I am biased, but the “Real Jim Keough” has written a very good book. His first printed edition had some problems that needed to be edited, such as some run-on sentences. Most of these have been corrected and should be on any copies ordered through .

He always finds the humor in sometimes tense situations. The book also reminds the reader repeatedly of the danger and sacrifice that so many of our police officers do daily. Whether it is the parts about my mom being up all night worrying, or the funny caper describing one of his friends that was then killed shortly thereafter, the book is a poignant reminder of the emotion and danger in this line of work.

My father is the best man I know. I aspire to be as respected in my career as he is in his. Every cop I meet who has met or worked with him is filled with respect and often has a funny or touching story that they either knew firsthand or had heard about him. Each story fills me with pride.. With this book, I am even more proud of him.
I have known Jim for a long time, and his Book was a step back in the past. Jim has always been able to make everyone laugh, humor was always part of Jims personality .
worked with Jim way back when..... remember the times well. a story well told.....
Great NYSP stories told in first person. I'm a police K9 handier and my dad is retired NYSP. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. I enjoyed it so much I'll read it again lol.
A book truly written from the heart and experience. Proud to say that I know the author as one of " NY's finest" and all around good man, husband and father.
A great read whether you're a trooper or not. Relived some great memories of Jim and others. Thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Great book. Lots of interesting stories from the "good ole days" when everyone wasn't trying to sue and you could get away with a lot of REALLY QUESTIONABLE things (compared to todays world we live in). It won't win any awards for writing style and the vocabulary is very basic (if we are being honest here), but It's a great read and i laughed out loud numerous times.
